In last week’s post, I shared a few photos of a series called “all they left was a chair” and some of my readers asked to see more of it. So, I am taking a short break from the usual content of My Visual Journal to share a bit more of that body of work.
The series "all they left was a chair" was created between 2011 and 2015 and is an homage to all the neglected chairs I have found on my journeys through the many abandoned buildings I have photographed over the years.
These old chairs, which eke out a miserable existence in dusty attics, dark kitchen corners and deserted living rooms, are more than just furniture to sit on - they give us a feeling for the life which once took place in a building somebody once called home.
To me these photographs are like portraits. Portraits of the former habitants of the places I have visited. The bodily shells of these people might not be visible anymore, but there still seems to be some sort of presence in these places.
That’s it from me today.
Thank you for being here and for reading this week’s newsletter.
X,
Susanne
