Thats a beautiful letter Susanne. Would you mind if I wrote my own in my newsletter? I feel like it is something that would be gorgeous spreading among the photography and artist communities here on Substack...

This made me tear up a little 🥲❤️ Photography shows me the light on dark days, too, and brings me into the moment. It inspires awe in me.

Like you, i never realized the import of photo books. But reflecting on what attracted me throughout my life, led me to exclaim that Natural Geographic is my photo book of choice. The exotic landscapes, people and animals continue to motivate me to visit new places and capture them on film. Within the lifetime of reviewing their photos some of the faces captured are my favorite characters, and the eyes tell stories of long lifetimes of hardship.

Thank you for your comment, Paul! I now remember my first photobook: it was ‚the world from above‘ and I was in awe of it. I love nature, travel and being outdoors. National Geographic is a great choice! Thank you for sharing this with me!

Sharon, your words really touched me. I had a rough day and your words really felt like a big hug to me! You have no idea what it means to me, that you feel so connected to my words and art. Thank you so much! Xx

Lovely write up and summation of what it means. I think it means the same for most.

To me, it’s like a good friend who pushes you when you need it and sits back when you want to take a break.

This is lovely Susanne, I really enjoyed reading your love letter, a beautiful insight into your passion, and stunning photography to go along with it. I miss seeing beautiful pictures not being in Insta so much so these were lovely to see 💛

I am so glad you enjoyed it. I was a bit hesitant first to post, but it just felt so right to write it as a love letter. Now I am happy it resonates with so many people (photographer or not).

I'm glad you posted it! I wrote a post about love and happiness in the style of a fairy tale a while ago and I thought it was a bit cheesy - but loved it at the same time and shared it anyway. I think there's something in writing what we love that connects with other people's hearts in a way that other writing sometimes doesn't.

a friend of mine just wrote a lengthy post about his return to loving photography, you might like it. it’s on point anyways. https://open.substack.com/pub/nostalgiakills/p/regaining-photography?r=dh7dm&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

I LOVE this, Susanne! I don't really know who I'd be without taking photos. It's the same with writing. I use both to process the world around me, to tell stories, to connect with people, preserve memories and moments... It's vital. I love the soft soft light in the photo of the bird in the tree - so delicate. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful thoughts and images. ✨

Charlene, thank you so much for your kind words. So interesting to hear writing does the same for you as photography! I can imagine why. Maybe one day I can say the same about writing too. I am still getting to know writing, but I can already see it‘s benefits.

You're welcome, it's a lovely piece! I think journaling is a great way to fall in love with writing. Seeing our own thoughts on the page is a powerful exercise. Look forward to reading more of your words! ✨

I started journaling four years after reading Julia Cameron (although I never finished it) trying to overcome an artist block. I haven't been constant with it and on some days I just stare at the blank page, but on other days I really enjoy and benefit from it. Thank you for being here and sharing your thoughts with me!

I love The Artist's Way! I did the whole book during lockdown but don't think I'd have managed it during a regular time of life, it's quite intense. 😅✨

It is quite intense and some of the exercises are really eye opening and helpful. I am just not a very spiritual person and her "way" wasn't really mine. But I know, that it helped a lot of people and that is a wonderful thing!

I know what you mean - I took a lot from it and then left what wasn't for me. I love the idea of artist dates, need to do that more often! ✨

I concur, all of the above, no matter how ‘cheesy’. Subscribed.
