“Photography is not all seeing in the sense that the eyes see. Our vision binocular, it is in a continuous state of flux, while the captures but a single isolated condition of the moment.”
- Edward Weston
Last week I wrote a little bit about the power of sequencing and how Robert Adams’s way of sequencing inspired me. I wanted to experiment with it myself. The photographs above were from such an experiment. They were made while on a walk the other day. My intention was to deepen the experience for the viewer. I wanted to give the impression as if the person is almost walking along with me. Photographing while slowly walking in one direction, closer and closer. Looking up, and down. Looking closer at something, then zoom out again. Just the way one does, if on a walk.
It changes the way I approach and photograph my subject. I already think about the sequencing while photographing. It is a bit less intuitive to me than just taking a photo of whatever attracts, moves or speaks to me. But I can definitely see its purpose and will use it in the future.
“My Visual Journal” is as an addition to my regular newsletter to share the photos I have taken during the week on my walks. The overall idea is “more photos, less words”. It will be send out every other week, alternating with my regular newsletter which is about different topics, but mainly about art, photography and the creative process.
Here is the link to past editions of “My Visual Journal”.
If you are enjoying My Morning Muse, you can support me by subscribing to my newsletter, liking the post, and sharing it with friends. It would mean the world to me!

Wow, you've achieved this very well, Susanne. I looked at it top to bottom and bottom to top and it works incredibly well both ways. I prefer the bottom to top way, it gives it a little bit more tension and mystery. Congratulations!
I really enjoyed these - especially “walking” up to that first boulder and taking a close look at it :) “Photography is not all seeing in the sense that the eyes see.” I was just journaling some thoughts about this today, as I enjoy playing with focus and lighting sometimes to create images that are much different than what I see in front of me but better capture what I feel while looking at it :)
