After studying Claude Batho’s work the past few weeks, reflecting on, and writing about it, I found myself inspired to pay more attention to the daily scenes around my own home.
Batho was a master at noticing the quiet, fleeting moments of domestic life: the sponge on the edge of the bathtub, peeled potatoes in the kitchen sink, dried flowers on top of the TV. Moments so mundane and familiar that we often stop to see them entirely. To me, it takes real talent and perseverance to truly see photographic opportunities in the things we are surrounded by every day. I truly admire Batho’s ability to notice and photograph the extraordinary in the ordinary.
I decided to challenge myself to pay more attention to my domestic surroundings to see what I would notice, and I found it to be difficult. When I went to Denmark on vacation, I kept looking. I was surprised by how much easier it was for me to notice scenes worth photographing around our rental home compared to our own home. Probably because everything was unfamiliar and new to me, and therefore more visible.
I still keep my mind and eyes open at home, but in the meantime, I wanted to share the things I noticed in and around our house in Denmark.
I started “My Visual Journal” as an addition to my regular newsletter to share the photos I take during my walks during the week. The overall idea is “more photos, fewer words.” Over time, I realized it is also a great way to practice curating, selecting, and sequencing a set of photographs and turning them into a short narrative.
I send out a new edition every other week, alternating with my regular newsletter, which covers various topics but mainly focuses on art, photography, and the creative process.
Here is the link to past editions of “My Visual Journal”.
As always, thank you for being here! ❤️

Susanne

These are terrific! Serene and beautiful. This type of photography is my favorite. There’s something about the quiet corners of the home that really speaks to me. They’re intimate and human, without showing humans in them. However, the best ones are the ones with Ben. The one with him behind the sheer curtain is precious. And his paws! 😍 - Can you tell I’m a dog lover!! A photo with a dog in it will always be my favorite!
Excellent foray into small scenes of every day life. Studying a master and delving into their style adds perspective to one’s own.
