What draws me to windows, aside from their natural framing, are the natural filters they provide to the photograph: dirty, scratched, cracked, frosted, thick, polarized... so many kinds of filters in this world to press our lenses up against.
Love the video and the the photos in it. I too am in love with dirty windows. There's something magical about them and what they show. Dirt, smudges, and grime are a natural filter. A mystery, a story untold. They also nicely frame the story within the story.
So amazing! So inspired by you to find the focus to attempt my own zine some day.
I have this series called "From My Window" that I've been opening the top half to photograph the sunrise and sunsets through the tree around my house. Just this fall season, I started photographing through the window.
The windows are double-pane ones with the gas in between them for temp control but eventually the gas escapes or expires and the windows develop really cool cloudy effects.
I love windows! Looking out, looking in, looking through…. There are so many ways where windows can help you create an interesting photograph. It’s a wonderful tool for photography in so many different ways.
This is a wonderful topic. Thanks for sharing!
And, as usual, your zine is beautiful. Love the design!
Thanks so much, Manuela! It is really is such an interesting topic and to look at others work and how the use and interprete windows. I might have to write another post which is focussing on photographs created by others.
Beautiful words and images .. and I absolutely love the zine … sadly physical purchases as a nomad living in a van are not possible … or perhaps I’d have to remove one of Nicolas pairs of shoes - and that would bring my 2025 to an early close - windows, both looking through and as part of the scene, have featured sporadically in my own journey, and now prompted by your own work, I’m looking forward to finding more in the year ahead ..
What an interesting project and an excellent summary of the photographic meaning of windows. It reminds me of an excellent book, Tracing Light, with work by Garry Fabian Miller.
The fold outs on the sides, are they printed on one long sheet of paper and then folded or are they taped together? This is a really wonderful design, I have been meaning to ask if you have a background in graphic design or something similar? I'm sure you know Josef Sudek's work with his studio windows, a body of work I adore, and I'm sure like many in the comments, I also share your enthusiasm for windows.
Thank you, Matthew! The foldouts are taped, because I don‘t have a roll of paper or large enough paper to print it one piece, but it is not noticeable. And no, I don‘t have a background in any of it. I have been doing assemblages in the past and I think this makes you think outside the box a lot. The design of this booklet was made on the go. You probably know how many new ideas are coming to you while making a zine.
And yes, Sudek‘s Windows series is one of my favorites. Btw. there is a book called ‚The window of my studio‘ by Josef Sudek, but it is quite expensive…

That is true! They can serve as filters sometimes. Thank you for your comment, Mark!

Thank you, Alex! And yes, all of that... The history of photography is full of amazing examples. I think I need to write a follow-up post...
Just one word, Susanne - genius! I missed the boat on the purchase. Lucky 3 souls. I really love this one!
Thank you, Juliette! Happy to hear you like it. And I appreciate your interest in buying it. Next time I will consider a higher edition.

That sounds like an interesting project and a good one for a zine!

I don‘t think it is a good idea to remove Nicolas shoes! 😉 But I get what you are saying and say Thank you!

Thank you, Taro! There is so much more to say about that subject. I might have to write a part 2!
