One of the great things about photographs and photographers is when you find someone or something new that you have not come across before. We presented. Well done. I shall add Rose Mandel to my ever growing list of photographers that I enjoy and can aspire to.

I see a kinship with your eye and your work, and her work - quietly powerful.

Sharing this essay. Thank you for this series!

Thank you, Patris! It is so good to hear you that her work speaks to you and that you are enjoying this series. Writing about these women makes me not only learn more about them, but also makes me reflect my own work.

Seriously appreciate your contemplative research (as you know I do your extraordinary work). Both gifts

I love her work! It definitely speaks to me and I especially life "The Errand of the Eye" series.

This "Photography was to both more than mere representation of what they saw. To capture the essence and the deeper truths of their subjects was just as important" is what motivates my work as a photographer. Thank you for putting all this together! I love it.

The double-exposures definitely reminded me of your work. And yes, "The Errand of the Eye" series is her strongest work in my opinion. So happy to hear, it resonated with you!

Brilliant article Susanne. Goes to show yet again that photography is a lived experience resulting in an authentic expression.

Thank you, Amit! I agree with you. Authenticity in photography comes from looking inside!

The minimalist photographic image can be poetic(as here) while simultaneously being worth a thousand printed words …

I was not familiar with her work so thank you for introducing her work to me. I find her work mysterious. I think about stories. I like her work because the "simple" becomes important.

Thank you for reading, Marianne. Here work is “simple” at first sight, but there is a second layer to it and that is was draws me into her work.

The style of these photographs appeals to my sense of wonder and imagination. The softness of the photos and the blurred or muted backgrounds are alluring... Visual poetry is an excellent description.

I can definitely see the influence this style of photography has on your work—at least from what I've seen of it.

Susanne, "To make what seems to be matter become spirit..." I adore these photos! It makes me want to find one of her books. The quality of her photos are ethereal and mysterious yet at the same time, familiar and painful. Thank you for introducing me to Rose Mandel.

I really recommend the book, if you enjoyed what you saw here. Are you familiar with Minor White? If you like that quote, you might like his work too.

I am not familiar... Lots of good artists to peruse, especially the ones you mentioned. This weekend I'll get familiar, thank you Susanne!

This is a new visual journey for me. I get how someone's work resonates with you almost as if you had the idea for it or it was similar to something you have done. I have shared that sense of familiarity as well. This is not the case so much for me with this book, but still I am liking it to the point of looking for a copy! The reflections on how her life experience shaped her work is profound and food for thought. Thanks -

Thank you, Paul! I find this sense of familiarity - as you called it so perfectly - very comforting and assuring for my own work.

Also, the book is wonderful. You should be able to get an affordable copy of it.

I hadn’t heard of Rose Mandel at all but I’m now fascinated by her work, particularly the project in which she photographed nature (flowers, weeds, grasses, and twigs) where “most of the subject and the background is soft and obscured, leaving only small details in focus”. This is the way that Terri Weifenbach more recently photographs gardens and nature and I love here work. I’m guessing there may have been some influence there.

So interesting that you saw a connection between those two. But you are absolutely right. There are similarities to the ways they use photographic techniques to abstract nature. Weiffenbach’s work is outstanding. Did you know I wrote about her too? https://open.substack.com/pub/susanneh/p/the-magical-world-of-terri-weifenbach?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

thank you Susanne for this introduction to Rose Mandel. While I am familiar with CSFA and am also have a couple of Minor White’s books, and his contribution to photography in the 20th century, as a photographer, his many years of work with Aperture Magazine, his various positions as an educator, somehow I missed Rose Mandel, but no longer thanks to this weeks newsletter..You mentioned her influence perhaps in your own work..I like to think as we continue our photographic journey and become students of this art we do see things that shape our own vision..yet not copy but evolve..thank you, wishing all good light.

Minor White is one of my favourite photographers. One day, I will write about him. There is just so much to say about him, I feel like I can't do justice to him and his work. Maybe one day...

"shape our own vision" - I really like that!

Thank you for reading and your comment. I appreciate it!
