“This photograph was actually the first… The photographs I took before this were just photographs of birds. But this felt like a dance or a choreography. And I thought, this is really interesting. These bird are acting and it’s beautiful. So, I wanted to continue.” - Terri Weifenbach
I wasn’t familiar with her work, so thank you so much. It certainly sits outside mainstream nature photography, and most nature photographers I know wouldn’t even consider shots like this. But, as you say, there is something magical about her images; such an original style, one that can really connect you with the scene, yet on the fringes of this very popular genre.
Another fantastic photographer! Thank you for showing this. As someone who has recently become enamored with nature/bird photography, I find this particularly inspired. Thanks Susanne!
What a wonderful view into the world of wiefenbach! My husband is a bird watcher and bird photographer who is discovering our backyard in Jos, Nigeria.
This is a great essay, thank you for sharing her work here, it is beautiful. Her style breaks the rules and creates almost magical images that draw me in - very inspiring! Looks like another book for the wish-list too!
Thank you for the lovely introduction to Terri Weifenbach and her work - it's beautiful and so creative. And fits together so nicely with your photo walk series. I needed this dose of inspiration and originality! I will definitely continue to follow her work.
Thank you, Mary! It’s so good to hear you like her photography and I was able to introduce her work to you! I would lie, if I would say she doesn’t inspire my walks…
Thank you for the beautiful introduction to a new to me photographer! I think the most fascinating aspect of photography is creating magic out of the ordinary. I love that she didn't travel far to create these magical images.
Thank you so much Susanne for sharing the work of another inspiring female photographer. Her images are beautiful, and for me, portray the very essence of nature rather than the subjects themselves. (I hope that makes sense 🙂)
These are so beautiful. What's that Einstein quote?—genius is about making complex things simple, not simple things complex? These feel like a kind of genius in that way.
Ah funny! I was thinking her work reminded me a bit of Rinko Kawauchi (especially Kawauichi's more recent work) and I see on her site that they've worked together.
W o w . As I was reading this I remembered a moment earlier today while I was cycling home and the sun was in my eyes and suddenly there were two blue tits twirling together, all sunlit wings in the air in front of me. It was magical and I think this photographer captures something like it.
You are so fully immersed into the scene by the way she photographs… I have been looked at that books many times and always discover something new. It is just wonderful. I am so glad you enjoyed learning about her. Thank you for your thoughts!
Very inspiring for those of us who are tempted to complain about lack of subject matter!
I know, right?

She definitely has a unique and refreshing way. I am happy you think so too!

Such great photos - a sort of portrait of her garden. ✨
Yes, a very unique portrait too!
Wonderful photos. Thank you for introducing me to her work.
You are very welcome!

Well sense, makes total sense! She perfectly captures the fleetingness of nature for me. Everything is in constant flux.

Very true. I sometimes am so bored by my daily walks with the same routine, this really helps to put on a new perspective to look at things.

Yes, Weifenbach is actually pretty popular in Japan. Their book collaboration is on my wishlist (of course!) ;-)
