Also, today’s newsletter is solely about the process creating photo zines and books. Feel free to skip this one if you are not interested.
The other day I shared this short video with the Substack community, showing these two small photo booklets I had created previously. In the following days, I received a lot of comments and messages asking all sorts of questions about my process, the materials I used and so on. I was a little surprised at how well- received this video was and how many questions there came from the community.
When I thought about all these questions, I was thinking about writing a newsletter and answering all of them one by one. But I also kept thinking that there is already so much good stuff about this topic on Substack. Written by amazing people, some of them much more experienced than myself.
Valuable, diverse and amazing zines and books have been created and written about already. So much helpful advice already has been given, informative insights and different opinions shared about the Why’s and How’s.
And because I find it so fruitful and enriching to learn about zine making from different perspectives, I decided to rummage through the archive of my fellow writers (at least the ones I remembered from the top of my head) and share these posts with you today.
This doesn’t mean I won’t write about my process (I promise, I will!). I just think this would go beyond the scope of today’s newsletter. I want to keep it short and digestible…
That being said, here are my favorite reads about today’s topic:
has written a series of post about his process of creation his zine “Dirty Work”, explaining all the diffrent steps:Then there is
who shares his zine-making experiences in Notes (in the Substack app) as well as in his newsletter:Marcel also has written about his process of working on a long-term photo project. The links to each article can be found in this post:
And last but not least - but amazingly the only woman here -
and her “Detail Project”:I know, this is an incredible looong list of links to posts. I usually skip those recommendations when there are too many. But I handpicked these posts for you, so you don’t have to scroll through the archives of these writers (although it is totally worth it).
My apologies to everyone I did not include here. If you have made a zine and have written about it, please share the link in the comments with us.
In two weeks, I will be answering all the questions I received from you and sharing insights about my own process of creating zines.
I hope I gave you enough links to check out and read in the meantime!
That’s it from me today.
Thank you for being here and for reading this week’s newsletter. It means a lot to me!
X,
Susanne

Thank you for putting this list together Susanne. If I ever attempt making a zine this will be my go to post. Also you make such beautiful zines… have always admired that.
What an incredibly generous list! This is beyond helpful, Susanne. Thank you very much.🌞
