Oh my. I have to think on this for a while. What a post, Susanne. What a story. What a book. It fills my heart in a way that is indescribable.

I love Joel! His 1996 book, On This Site, is kind of an antecedent to this one. A beautiful and powerful project.

“Between 1993 and 1996, Joel Sternfeld photographed 50 infamous crime sites around the US. On This Site contains images of these unsettlingly normal places, ordinary landscapes left behind after tragedies, their hidden stories disturbingly invisible. Each photograph is accompanied by a text describing the crime that took place at the location.”

Thank you for your comment, Rob. I don‘t own that book (yet), but is on my list ever since I bought „Our loss“. Joel really is a treasure!

After subscribing and going back , reading your posts about photo books (I think I mentioned this in a previous comment) I have been going through my bookcase, and have found wonderful treasures I haven’t seen for years. One of them qualifies for my favorite; “Seasons Of Light”, Photographs and Stories By Peter Brown..I got it used and it was my happy place , full of inspiration for months on end..

I‘ve found „seasons of light“ on his website and it looks really interesting. His books are rather difficult to find here in Germany, but I will keep looking out for them! Thank you so much for being here. And sharing thoughts and books with me. It really is appreciated.

Thanks for writing so well about a Photobook I wasn’t aware of. I can see why it resonated for you this year.

In answer to your final question, the standout photobook for me this year was Monument by Trent Parke.

Joel Sternfeld is a treasure. This book is anomaly among his others. And it moved me very deeply. I was thinking of it over the last several days. An unhoused man living in my neighbourhood passed away in his donated tent. I have been taking my own photos of the spot where he passed away. In imitation and in memory....

Beautiful. I followed David's story when it happened, and was really moved by Sternfeld's photographs. David's husband was interviewed on Death, Sex and Money a few years ago. Here is the link if you want to listen: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/deathsexmoney/episodes/finding-meaning-after-my-husbands-public-death-death-sex-money

The care that David seemed to have for the world...it is indeed our loss. And it's hard to look at the world in 2023, the warmest year on record, and not think about all life David worked so hard to protect, and eventually gave his for.
