I don’t know how many times in the past I have been sitting on the couch, scrolling through my newsfeed on Instagram seeing all the advertisements and videos from companies and people I did not follow and getting annoyed that I barely got to see what I came for in the first place: the photographs from friends, family and colleagues and all the other people I was following.
I thoroughly enjoy your visual journals, especially the walk in the park you took us on late last year. I like seeing how you glean inspiration from other photographers and apply it to your practice.
On a personal level, I'm drawn to your work/Substack because you are a fellow self-taught female creative on her own unique path. I would love to read your thoughts on more photobooks or work from non-male-identified photographers. The photography world is a tad heavy on male representation, and there are so many incredible photographers out there who identify differently.
Thank you, Al! I just had a conversation on notes today, that it would be such a great idea to highlight more "non-male-identified photographers" (thanks for saying it so correctly). I sure will do that in the future. I already have one book in mind! =)
My journey to substack was almost identical to yours, except that I had been looking for an outlet for my writing. I’ve been a FlakPhoto person since around 2005 and trust Andy’s sensibilities. I found your newsletter on my first day! The intersection of writing and photography is where I live as well. I so enjoy your newsletter and your photography. Thank you for sharing!
I can’t remember how I came across “My Morning Muse”, which was only last month. Several reasons come to mind that I ended up subscribing. First, I find your thoughts about photography, about the daily practice of photography and about photobooks valuable. I look forward to what you have to say. I also find great courage in your willingness to put it out there for us. Courage is always contagious. And finally, I see in your work and your words a kindred spirit.
It's nice to hear about your experience with Substack. I have definitely enjoyed the last three months on here. Something I still need to get better at is keeping up with everyone else. I want to set aside some dedicated time to simply read and engage with others, but that's been a little harder than I expected. Still, I feel the same way about not wasting time on here. It just feels very fulfilling to put something together every week and send it out there. And I am with you on the doubts. Every single time I hit send, I wanna take it all back. :)
This place has been a kind and nurturing place which has become rare in the internet world.
Also, what made me subscribe to you was your photography and your writing. I really enjoy your images a lot, and your writing is honest and genuine and I can tell that you are the kind of person I would like to spend time with. That's why I subscribed. :) It means so much that you have been so encouraging with my Substack. Thank you!! And I can't wait what 2024 will bring for you on here!!
I especially love your visual journals. The way you pair photos makes me think. I love to take photos and I want to be a better writer. Your newsletter inspires me to image creating my own Substack. Thanks so much for all the energy and thought you put into your work here!
Thank you for your feedback, Marlee! I am glad you like my newsletter! And I would like to encourage you to start your own newsletter. It has been an incredible learning experience for me!
Happy anniversary Susanne! Seeing your photos and reading your stories almost always put a smile on my face. Keep doing whatever you feel like doing. :)
Beautifully said Susanne. Putting words to my images can be hard, really hard, but the effort is so worthwhile. It requires a much deeper level of reflection and clarity than posting ‘bangers’ looking for likes. And I learn so much more reading about others’ work.
Congrats Susanne on a year of evolving your Substack into something wholly unique and valued.
I personally never got into Instagram or other such apps. I started doing a daily photo blog / post in the early days before social media and I haven't stopped since. But I do enjoy connecting with other photographers here on Substack in a more meaningful way.
To answer your question, I really enjoy reading about your approach to journaling and photography, as well as seeing your approach to how you connect with your images -- whether sequencing for a post or zine, or just seeing the way you see the world.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I hope, I will have the same endurance as you. It is very impressive. But as long there are people like you - open to meaningful connections and conversation - I am sure I will keep doing it!

This is very kind of you to say. Thank you so much for your feedback.
I love your photographs and the angle in which you present your world. Ben is not too bad either :)
Thank you, Byra! From Ben as well! 😉
Thanks for writing this, many of us are frustrated about social media.
Glad there is Substack though!

Exactly! Both reading and writing here has been so beneficial for me!
❤️
Always a pleasure to read your words and see your photos, Susanne.
Thank you, Marcel!
I recently deleted Instagram and have been so much happier for it! Are you still on there Susanne?
I am barely on there anymore, but for some reason I can‘t get myself to delete my account.
Hola Tus Fotografías Son Excelentes , Pero La Escritura Paisajista Es Fascinantes. Un Saludo.
Muchas gracias por tus amables comentarios. Todo lo mejor para ti también!
