In my early twenties, my then-boyfriend (now-husband) and I went on a trip to Madeira in the North Atlantic. We stayed at a hotel where we met an elderly couple, who had been spending their vacation time at that same place for the past twenty years. Back then, I didn‘t get it: why would anyone spend their precious vacation time at one place year after year after year when our amazing planet has so many other beautiful and interesting places to offer?
Now thirty years later, I find myself returning to the same places over and over again too. And I get it now. It is a bit like returning home or visiting old friends. It is the familiar which is comforting, but because nothing ever remains the same it is also refreshing.
For me, it isn‘t Madeira, but Denmark. Visiting the beaches, the woods, and the National Park with its marshes, dunes and heather will never be boring to me. There is always change. Change within Nature and change within me. Change in the way Nature presents itself to me and change in the way I perceive it.
The photographs in today‘s visual journal are from a beach I have been to in January. Back then the waves were crashing, the tide was high and the water was covering most of the beach, so I couldn‘t get far. This time the Northern Sea was much calmer and allowed me to pass and continue my walk.

I started “My Visual Journal” as an addition to my regular newsletter to share the photos I have taken during the week on my walks. The overall idea is “more photos, less words”. It will be send out every other week, alternating with my regular newsletter which is about different topics, but mainly about art, photography and the creative process.

went to the same place on holidays, always the same time of the year for 15 years in a row. i can write a book about it, sista! 😊
and yes, you are right: the place is never the same!
Beautiful images Susanne.
I read 'A Line in the World' by Dorthe Nors and have wanted to visit the Danish coast ever since. I think its good to have familiar holiday areas that we return to again and again. The west coast of Scotland is my go to place.
